What taxi and rideshare advertising is
This format puts an ad on a car that drives around town. Taxis carry a sign on the roof, called a taxi top. Rideshare cars carry a lighted topper, often with a digital screen, or a wrap. Some rideshare cars also have a screen inside the cabin.
The ad is small. A taxi top is a roof sign, not a full side. What it offers is spread. Many cars drive many areas through the day, so a campaign can touch a whole metro in small doses.
Taxi tops are sold through taxi fleets or agencies. Rideshare toppers are sold through third-party networks that sign up drivers.
How taxi and rideshare advertising is bought
- The unit. One car, for a four-week period. Prices in the guides are per vehicle per four weeks.
- Minimums. They vary by market. One guide says New York taxi tops carry $5,000 minimums.
- Creative. One guide puts design at $500 to $2,000 for car-top campaigns, and says 4 to 12 weeks is a typical minimum.
- Digital vs static. A static top shows one message. A digital top can change message, hour or area. It costs more.

Rates vary by market and date. Digital toppers cost more than static signs. Check each seller's unit, minimum and design fee before you compare.
Who taxi and rideshare advertising suits
- Home services. Not a natural fit, because the roof sign is small and moves through all areas. A short offer with a phone number works best.
- Law, health and auto. Dealers and clinics that serve a whole city can use a small sign to repeat a name in many places. Attorney ads follow state bar rules.
- Venues and regional brands. Venues in busy districts, and brands that want city-wide presence, use taxi tops to announce dates and offers.
- Agencies. Agencies buy taxi and rideshare tops to add reach in dense areas, often next to billboards and transit.
How to measure taxi and rideshare advertising honestly
We found no Geopath audience rating for taxi tops or rideshare toppers. Geopath's transit list covers bus exteriors and station formats. Sellers give their own estimates. One 2021 press report on a rideshare wrap network gave 170,000 monthly views per car as the seller's figure. Ask how any number was counted.
- Put a phone number or short web address on the topper that appears nowhere else.
- Add "How did you hear about us?" to every call and form.
- Ask for a report of dates, hours and areas.
- Compare calls before, during and after the campaign.

Where garbage truck panels fit
A taxi top is a small sign on a moving car. A framed printed panel on a city garbage truck is a printed sign on a city truck. The printed panel swaps in under 30 seconds, so the message can change by month, though a new message still goes through design, review and printing first. Add a tracking number to your panel and count your own calls. No city is open yet, so read about garbage truck advertising or join the list for your city.
