How it works

Three steps from your logo to the truck.

  1. 1

    Pick your city.

See which areas its routes cover. We are opening city by city.

  2. 2

Send us your ad, or we design it with you.

Seven words or fewer reads best from the street. We check it against the city's ad policy.

  3. 3

    We print and install it.

Change the message any month. The printed panel swaps in under 30 seconds.

One frame. A new message whenever you want one.

A new message still goes through design, review and printing first. Then the swap itself takes under 30 seconds.

Who it's for

Built for businesses that live on local calls.

  • Change the message with the season. Roof checks in spring, AC in summer, furnaces in fall.
  • Put your own tracking number on the panel and count the calls yourself.
  • In each city we will sell one paid advertiser per truck.

Can I pick a route?

Trucks are assigned by the city. Pick your city and we will show which areas its routes cover.

The real thing

A real frame on a real city truck.

This panel carries a city's own message. Yours would sit in the same frame.

  1. 1. Aluminum frame, made by us

We make the frames and print the panels ourselves.

  2. 2. Printed panel, swaps in under 30 seconds

A framed sign, not a wrap. The printed panel slides out of the frame.

  3. 3. Collection schedules differ by city

We quote the city's own schedule, never a national average.

How we talk about reach.

We will never headline an impression number.

Any reach figure we show is labeled as an estimate, with how we got it. Refuse trucks are not part of the industry's audited audience ratings (Geopath).

Add a tracking number to your panel and count your own calls.

Questions we hear first.

What is garbage truck advertising?

Garbage truck advertising puts a local business's message on the side of a city refuse truck. You may also hear it called trash truck advertising, refuse truck advertising or recycling truck advertising. With us, your ad is a printed panel held in an aluminum frame on the side of a city collection truck. It is a framed sign, not a wrap. The printed panel slides out of the frame and swaps in under 30 seconds. Roadway has built sign frames for refuse and recycling trucks since 1987. Read the full guide to garbage truck advertising.

Can you advertise on garbage trucks?

Yes, if the city agrees. A refuse truck belongs to the city, so the city has to approve ads on its trucks before anyone can sell them. Cities have put ads on their refuse trucks before: Columbus, Georgia's council approved a contract for it in 2021. We are opening city by city, starting in Southern California. No city is open yet, so join the list for your city and we will write when it opens. See how cities approve truck ads.

How is a garbage truck ad different from a mobile billboard or a vehicle wrap?

A mobile billboard is a truck you rent to drive a route you pick. It is quoted by the day and runs as a campaign with a start and an end. A vehicle wrap is printed vinyl stuck to the body of a vehicle, so a new message means a new wrap. A garbage truck panel is a printed sign in a frame on a city truck that already drives its route. Change the message any month: the printed panel swaps in under 30 seconds. Compare outdoor advertising formats.

How much does garbage truck advertising cost?

No two cities price alike, so we quote each city's own rate. Book a 20-minute call and you will leave knowing the rate. Five things move the number: your city, how many trucks, how many months, one side or two, and printing. To compare garbage trucks with mobile billboards, wraps and bus ads, read our truck advertising cost guide, which lists the prices other sellers publish and links to every source.

How long does an ad run?

Three-month minimum. Ask us about what happens after. You can change the message any month. Roof checks in spring, AC in summer, furnaces in fall. A new message still goes through design, review and printing first, then the swap itself takes under 30 seconds.

What size is the panel, and what should my ad say?

The panel live area is 91 x 27 inches, with two sides per truck. Seven words or fewer reads best from the street, so lead with one offer, your business name and a phone number. Send us your ad, or we design it with you. You can preview your ad on a truck right now, free and with no signup. Full sizes and file prep are on the panel specs page.

What can't run on a city truck?

Alcohol, tobacco and vaping, cannabis, adult content, firearms, gambling, political, religious and issue ads, payday lending and pawn, and profanity. A city may use a stricter list. Some trades must also show a line on the panel: contractors show a California license number, attorneys show the responsible attorney or firm and a real office address, and health ads cannot market Medicare Advantage plans. Read the ad policy.

Who approves my ad?

In each city, every ad will be checked against that city's written ad policy before it runs. Before that, we check your ad against the policy ourselves and show you a mockup of it on a truck, labeled as an illustration, so you see it before anything is printed. Once your city opens, every install comes with a photo of your ad on the truck.

How will I know if my truck ad is working?

Count your own calls. Add a tracking number to your panel that appears nowhere else, so every call to it came from the truck. Then ask every new customer how they heard about you. It takes five seconds and catches the callers who skip the tracking number.

Why don't you show an impression count?

Refuse trucks are not part of the industry's audited audience ratings (Geopath). Any reach figure we show is labeled as an estimate, with how we got it. We will not lead with an audience number, because we would be guessing. We would rather you count your own calls.

Can I pick a route?

Trucks are assigned by the city. Pick your city and we will show which areas its routes cover.

Book a 20-minute call.

You will leave knowing your city's status, what your panel could look like, and the next step.

We call within 1 business hour, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm Pacific.
